There are actors, and then there are actors. There are those who are designed to dazzle in front of us with sculpted bodies and plastic smiles. Who illustrate for us, in all their cinematic grace, all that we sometimes wish we could be. Then there are the others. The actors who are so real you think that you could almost touch them through the silver screen. Actors who imbue every scene with such an intense and natural presence that the world you are being mesmerized by doesn’t feel all that separate from your own experience — actors who carry the weight of the world they are representing into every frame. Dick Miller was one of those actors to me. I, like many of my generation, was first introduced to him by his EPIC cameo in Terminator 1. When I got a bit older, I was made aware of his killer collaborations with Corman and Dante. It had long been a dream of mine to meet and work with him, and I even attempted to get him to reprise his role as the flower guzzling Fouch in my live read adaptation of The Little Shop of Horrors. Sadly, it did not work. He had gotten on in years and was more or less retired from the spotlight that he dominated for nearly five decades. Dick Miller belongs to a rare and dying class of performer. One populated with the likes of Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton. Character actors who took up screentime in over two hundred films. That’s over two hundred different stories and over two hundred different universes, and yet they made sense in everyone. They never felt out of place. For where some actors stand to highlight what separates us from them, they stood to remind us what connects us. That those worlds they occupied were just around the corner and not so far from our reach. I’m going to miss hearing Dick Miller’s immutable cole-eyed squint, his Bronx infected timbre, and the subtle blue collar pathos he brought to every role he embodied. Thankfully he left me a long library to remember him by. Rest in Peace Mr. Miller. You were truly one of the greats.

Χαρακτηριστικότερος ίσως ρόλος του ηταν αυτός του Murray Futterman στις ταινίες “Gremlins” και “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”. Οι συμμετοχές του σε παραγωγές όπως: Explorers, Piranha, The Howling, A Bucket of Blood, The Little Shop of Horrors, Chopping Mall, Night of the Creeps, The Terminator, The ‘Burbs and Small Soldiers, παραμένουν αξιομνημόνευτες.
